The Wednesday Boys

The origins of the Wednesday Boys go back to the fifties and early sixties when at that time quite a number of Helen’s Bay members did not have Saturdays off work but a half day on Wednesdays instead.  Therefore those members played golf on Wednesday afternoons, hence the name.

In more recent times and at present, although the golf on Wednesdays is open to all full, associate and over 80 categories members (as from 1 January 2010), it is the more senior, retired members who participate.

The emphasis for several decades has been more on social golf rather than winning prizes.  To that end fourballs are drawn just prior to the 1.00pm teeing off time and the winner of the 9 holes stableford competition receives three golf balls. Anyone having a ‘2’ wins a golf ball.

That said there are a number of trophies played for during the year with the main reward being getting your name on the cup!

Highlights of the year would be the John Coote Eclectic Trophy played for during Jan, Feb and March, President’s Prize Day and Captain’s Prize Day for the WBs just prior to Captain’s Day when the winner also receives the Centenary Claret Jug which was presented by Peter Clarke in 1996.  All these events are followed by a High Tea where Jacket and Tie is the dress code. There is also a High Tea on the Charity Shield Day at the beginning of September when, each year, a different charity is supported.  The year ends with the Christmas High Tea, end of year prizes, carols, and entertainment by some of the members, etc.

Each week the emphasis is very much on après golf when the players congregate in the clubhouse for drinks, craic and the results/announcements.
